The game is totally immersive and the graphics are so good that it’s almost impossible to distinguish it from reality. In fact, some people have been fooled into thinking it’s real life!
While the word “metaverse” is largely a buzzword that has been used in gaming circles to describe VR worlds, it has a much deeper origin. The term was first coined by American science fiction novelist Neal Stephenson in his book Snow Crash in 1992. He describes the metaverse as a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet.
As technology progressed and games like Second Life became more popular, the idea of a metaverse was brought back into mainstream culture. Gaming company Linden Labs even adopted the term to describe its own virtual world creation software platform that many other games are created with. This platform is called Second Life: an online community where users can sign up to create their own avatar and interact with others using voice chat or text boxes while they create things like homes, furniture and cars.

If you’re looking to find the best Metaverse games out there, you’ve come to the right place! Many of these games are ones that I enjoy playing myself and have been for months, so I can speak from a lot of personal experience.

1. Axie Infinity

Developed using the Unity engine, this game allows players to breed unique and rare digital creatures called Axies and battle them in turn-based battles. After breeding Axies, players can sell or trade them in a decentralized marketplace, as each Axie is an ERC721 token or a non-fungible token. Users can also buy eggs to hatch new Axies and grow their collection.
The game is available to play on Steam and is currently in pre-seed funding phase, but you can join the community by visiting their Discord channel.
Axie Infinity is a collectible monster game where players will be able to collect and trade digital creatures called Axies. The game has some similarities to the ever popular CryptoKitties, although the premise is different. In Axie Infinity, players will have their own virtual island on which they’ll be able to hatch, raise and battle with their Axies.
The gameplay mechanics are simple: you have to give your Axies food and medicine every day, otherwise your beloved pets will die. Like CryptoKitties, each Axie is unique and has its own traits, so when you hatch an egg, you’ll get a random monster with a certain color and pattern. However, each Axie has two body parts – head and tail – so you can mix and match body parts of several monsters to create an entirely new creature (much like in the DNA of living things).
The game is set in a cyberpunk fantasy world based on the creatures known as Axies. The gameplay is similar to other online battle games, but with some differences. For example, an axie can be bred and combined with another, creating a new type of creature.
In addition to being able to collect and play with different types of axies, the players can also buy and sell them on the secondary market (Axie Infinity Marketplace). All axies are non-fungible tokens which means that each one has specific characteristics and cannot be replaced by another.
When Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese game developer, announced Axie Infinity in early 2018, the studio took the cryptocurrency community by storm. The game is the company’s first foray into blockchain technology, and it has a strong focus on its in-game economy (IGE).
IGEs are games which use blockchain technology to maintain an internal economy that runs alongside the game. The Ethereum-based Axie Infinity tokens (Axies) are non-fungible. They can be purchased using Ether or bitcoin, and they can also be bred to create new Axies.
A large part of the appeal of IGEs comes from their collectible nature; players can collect items and trade them with other players for value outside of gameplay. Some of these items have been sold for thousands of dollars in the secondary market.
However, this particular aspect of IGEs is a double-edged sword; while some consider it to be a fun way to earn extra income, others view it as an exploit which devalues the game and its items. This makes some IGE players wary of buying Axies for gameplay purposes because they know that their value will depreciate once trading opens and people start speculating on their prices.
2. Horizon Worlds

Horizon Worlds is a free virtual reality, online video game with an integrated game creation system developed and published by Meta Platforms for the Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest.
The game was first launched on December 9th, 2021, and it has accumulated over thousands of hours of total play time. Horizon Worlds is different from other VR games in that it allows players to create their own levels with multiple gaming components.
The game’s default gameplay mode allows up to four players to play together in an infinite number of randomly generated maps, each containing 2D and 3D platforming elements.
Players can choose from several weapons and abilities, such as bombs or wall-running, to take on the enemies. As you progress through the map, you collect golden coins that allow you to unlock different avatars. Each avatar has its own set of animations, which makes a big difference in the VR gameplay experience.
There are currently more than 300 avatars available for purchase in the game’s store. The other gameplay mode is called the “game creator” and allows players to build their own levels with custom rules. You can use the “editor” to create your level by choosing from an assortment of prefabricated backgrounds and props.
This is a game I’ve spent a lot of time playing, and there are plenty of reasons why I keep coming back. The customization system is the best part, in my opinion. The developers have created unique characters from which you’ll choose one to play as, but it’s your own imagination that really brings them to life. You can pick from different voice options, hairstyles, eye colors, and anything else you might want for your character. Even better, you’re not limited to just one character; you’re able to make as many as you want and switch between them whenever you like!
Horizon Worlds’ graphics are also very impressive. There’s a wide variety of landscapes to explore, each with their own unique set of flora and fauna. It feels like a real world—a place I could actually go visit and see with my own eyes. I haven’t seen any glitches or weird sound effects yet, so I’m impressed by how smoothly the game runs.
3. Decentraland
Decentraland is a virtual reality platform and marketplace, similar to Second Life. It’s in early development but has a lot of potential.
It allows users to create all sorts of experiences, from games and education simulations, to art installations and social networks. Think of it as an open-source version of Second Life, except in this case it’s not controlled by a single corporation like Linden Labs and it’s built on blockchain technology.
It is a virtual world where people create, experience, and monetize content and applications. It also creates opportunities for users to interact with each other and build meaningful relationships. Decentraland’s purpose is to give users a space to have fun, experiment, and earn money by creating interesting things in the virtual world.
The currency of Decentraland is MANA tokens. You can use MANA tokens to purchase land in the virtual world or items created in Decentraland. You can also buy MANA tokens from exchanges that support MANA trading.
Users can purchase virtual land with MANA tokens in the Genesis City, which is located at 0x0 of the 10 kilometer by 10 kilometer map. The cost of land depends on its distance from the origin point (Genesis City). The Genesis City has a limited amount of parcels for sale as well as one parcel that will be given to active participants in the Decentraland community during an initial user creation event known as Genesis City auction.
You can create and experience anything you want, from an interactive sculpture to a role-playing game to an entire town. Decentraland is the first virtual reality platform owned by its community. The district0x Network provides the tools for users to run entire districts in a decentralized way, meaning it is not controlled by any single entity.
There are a lot of virtual reality worlds out there that you can explore using only a mouse and keyboard, but none of them deliver the same kind of immersive feeling as a world that you can actually walk through. Decentraland is one of those VR worlds, and it’s set up a way for people to experience it without having to go through the trouble of buying VR hardware. All you need is a browser and the MetaMask extension for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Decentraland is all about community-driven content creation. It gives everyone the tools they need to build whatever they want: scenes, artworks, stories, games, or even applications that run on the Ethereum network. Using simple tools built into your browser, you can get started on building anything from scratch, or you can take part in events like the recent Paint New Heights competition to win prizes for your creations. If you’re looking for more advanced tools, Decentraland also has an SDK that allows experienced users to create their own social games and applications.
In addition to being able to buy and sell your land on the open market, Decentraland lets you create scenes. A scene is like a story that someone creates within the world. A scene could be as simple as a painting or as complicated as an RPG game. The simple Builder tool gives anyone the ability to create artworks and scenes. Once created, scenes are published to the Marketplace and other people can visit them by stepping into them using their browser (no VR required) or even by downloading them to their mobile device; this makes it easy to transport your work from one place to another.
4. VRChat – Online 3D virtual Platform

VRChat is a virtual world like no other. It’s a completely user-generated virtual world—people can create their own 3D avatars and their own worlds, which they can then share with others on the platform. The avatars not only look like their creators, but they can also be made to look like anyone else you know or even just an amalgamation of pieces from different looks.
The possibilities are endless. But more than that, it’s a place where people can come together from all over the world and meet up in an entirely new environment every single time. They can hang out in these worlds and chat with one another through voice chat. They can dance and sing and play games together. They can even share their screen to show each other anything they’re working on. And for creators, it provides an outlet for creativity that’s unlimited in its potential, since there are no rules about what types of worlds or avatars people can create on this platform.
It allows users to interact with other users in shared virtual worlds where users can socialize, play games, and create their own worlds to play in. Users can chat with each other using text or voice chat. Users can also make their own 3D avatar, or use one of the avatars provided for them. They can choose from several constituent parts that make up their avatar, such as hair, body type, color of skin and eyes, etc.
I first learned about VRChat when I saw the trailer for it during the 2017 Gamescom convention in Cologne Germany. I had never heard of the game before but thought that it looked interesting because it looked like a virtual reality version of Second Life. I was intrigued by this concept because I had always enjoyed Second Life as an open-world platform where people could create their own personalized spaces and live out their daily lives there.
The community is extremely active and very friendly with each other. The creators are very active on Twitter and frequently engage with the community on Twitter to address any issues that they might be having with the platform or games.
5. The Sandbox
Sandbox, a virtual reality world for users to create and interact with each other in, was first launched in 2012 as a mobile game by Pixelowl co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget.
It is a virtual gaming world where users can create, buy and sell in-game items. It’s a platform that allows its users to make money by participating in the world of Sandbox, without having to leave their living room or getting a job.
The creators claimed that their goal was not to make an “official” game similar to those created by big companies such as Electronic Arts (EA) and Ubisoft, but rather one that is “so open that it can be whatever you want it to be.”
The game is based on blockchain technology, with each player being a unique character represented as a custom-created block. Players have the freedom to wander around the map, building anything they wish as long as it’s in line with the sandbox’s community-driven set of rules.
When Sandbox was first launched in 2012 by France-based Pixelowl co-founders Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget, it was a mobile game. In 2018, the game gained new life when it was relaunched as a blockchain-based metaverse, with players being able to create their own digital content on the decentralized network and receive payment for it directly through cryptocurrency.
The beauty of Sandbox is that there’s no one right way to play—the game takes place in a massive 1:1 scale map where every player creates their own miniature universe out of cubes and then collaborates with others in an effort to build more complex things like houses, cities, and even planets. The world is divided into different regions which can be claimed by individual users, who then have complete say over what happens there.
With an extensive array of tools including 3D modeling software, audio equipment, and motion capture gear for animation and special effects, Sandbox has attracted millions of members from over 180 countries.

Other users will visit your LAND and be able to participate in your creations: whether it’s a full-blown adventure world with quests and puzzles, or just a place for friends to hang out and chat. If you want to monetize your LAND, there are many ways to do so within The Sandbox’s metaverse. If you have an idea for something that would make money if you had a hundred people paying $10 each month to participate, but which doesn’t work as a standalone product, it might be perfect as one of the many activities available on your LAND.
6. Rec Room
Rec Room is an online video game that can be played for free on your desktop, smartphone, or virtual reality headset. The game has an integrated open creation system—allowing players to create any kind of content. As a result, the game allows players to participate in numerous activities, such as playing games against each other, exploring the wilderness and caves, going on quests with friends, or building whatever they want in their own private space.
In Rec Room, you can create games in a similar way that you can in any other video game. You can put your own content into it, or even just play around with the different objects and environments to create something unexpected and new for yourself. The most popular creations are of course the ones that are multiplayer, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had within the single-player games.
It’s not just single player experience; it’s an online multiplayer game where you can create your own avatar and interact with other people through your HMD (Head Mounted Display). And the controls are super simple; you use your hands to pick up objects like balls or paddles, and use your body to move around. But if you don’t have an HMD yet, you can still play the game on a screen (using a mouse or keyboard) until you are ready to buy one.
Rec Room has VR support and cross-platform compatibility between the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift making it possible to play with people on other headsets, or even without a headset if they’d prefer.
7. Fortnite
When Epic Games launched Fortnite, it was an instant hit. Its futuristic-looking graphics, creative gameplay, and constant updates kept people coming back. However, Epic Games wasn’t finished with Fortnite just yet. They wanted to do more, and they didn’t want to stop at just game development.
Fortnite has been a huge success, with millions of players worldwide. The game has also attracted attention from celebrities like Drake and football players like JuJu Smith-Schuster, who have streamed the game with their large audiences. As an open world sandbox survival game, it should come as no surprise that you can do many different things while playing the game.
While there are many ways to play the game, Fortnite has slowly started to introduce new ways to experience the game. In July of 2018, Epic Games announced that players could use virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to play the game on PC. Soon after this announcement a virtual reality concert was held in Fortnite where attendees could watch a band perform and interact with them by shooting them with their weapons, just like in the game.
Fortnite has since done live concerts that are similar to last year’s concert but have featured more popular artists such as Travis Scott and Marshmello. These events have been streamed on Twitch but have also been available for viewers using VR headsets. However, these concerts only allow people to watch them through VR headsets and not attend in real life like last year’s event did.
